The Cork 'Langers in a Banger' in Tblisi last week.

The three Cork men who are driving from Cork to Central Asia in a 1.2l Renault Clio to raise funds for Marymount are making great strides.

Tom O’Connor, Ruari Casey, and Sean Foley, who call themselves the ‘Langers in a Banger, set off on the 12,000km journey at the start of the month, and by the end of last week had made it to Tblisi in Georgia.

‘The car has just been shipped to Baku in Azerbaijan, because the land border has been closed to civilians since the war. Tom said on Thursday: “We ran with the bulls [in Pamplona, Spain], gone through the Alps (via the Furka Pass), and then into Istanbul. We also saw the hot air balloons in on to Cappadocia in Turkey, and then drove through the Dark Canyon in Turkey and the treacherous, cliffside D915 road, both regarded as some of the most dangerous roads in the world.” Their little Clio is getting “smellier by the day”, he said, as it has no air conditioning, but is holding up better than expected.

The trip has raised nearly €8,000 so far for Marymount. “We’re hoping to increase that over the next few weeks,” said Tom.
