All under-18s are free at OPW heritage sites for August

Free admission to heritage sites across Cork has been extended to all visitors under 18 for the month of August.

Minister of state at the department of public expenditure Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran announced the expansion of the scheme on Tuesday, which previously saw free admission to heritage sites under the control of the Office of Public Works (OPW) for children under 12.

The initiative aims to encourage young people and families to discover Ireland’s rich cultural and historical heritage, while helping to make these experiences more accessible by removing financial barriers.

The free admissions period will run from August 1 to August 31 only, with fee-paying sites in Cork included in the scheme.

OPW heritage sites across Cork participating in the scheme include Charles Fort in Kinsale, Garinish Island, Doneraile Court and Estate, Anne’s Grove Gardens in Castletownroche, Fota Arboretum and Gardens, and Barryscourt Castle in Carrigtwohill.

Other non-fee-paying OPW heritage sites in Cork include Castlelyons Carmelite Priory, the Sherkin Franciscan Friary, Maughanasilly Stone Row, Cahervagliar Ringfort, and Ratass Church and Ogham Stone.

Mr Moran said: “Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature, and culture over the summer holidays.”

Tickets may be booked online in advance for a number of OPW heritage sites.

Heritage Ireland has also compiled a range of venue itineraries, which are available to download via the Heritage Ireland website.
