A district judge asked a 45-year-old man if he had anything to say before he was remanded in custody with consent to bail requiring a lodgement of €100 — that he did not have — and he replied: “Yeah, it’s a load of bollocks.”

Timmy O’Shea, of no fixed address, appeared at Cork District Court without the benefit of a solicitor because of a strike following the introduction of a new payment scheme for free legal aid by the minister of justice, Jim O’Callaghan.

Mr O’Shea was arrested and brought before the court on a bench warrant.

He was charged with failing to appear at Cork District Court on two previous occasions.

Mr O’Shea is also charged with signing a recognisance on June 2 to appear in court on June 24, when it is alleged he failed to appear.

He faces a similar charge in respect of entering a recognisance on April 21 to appear in court on June 6, and allegedly failing to do so.

Mr O’Shea faces two further charges.

One of the charges relates to the alleged theft of €20 worth of National Lottery scratch cards at lunchtime on January 23 at Quay News, Flying Enterprise, Barrack St, Cork.

Finally, he was charged with having a Stanley knife on his person at Douglas Street, Cork, on April 21.

Judge Waters remanded him in custody with consent to bail of €300, of which €100 had to be lodged in cash.

Mr O’Shea said he had no money. He complained that another person was granted bail when he was not, adding that this was unfair.

Judge Waters said that Mr O’Shea faced charges of failing to show up on two previous occasions.

Finalising the order, Judge Waters asked Mr O’Shea if he wanted to say anything else before being remanded in custody with consent to bail.

The accused, who was sitting in the dock at Courtroom 1 at Cork District Court, said: “Yeah, it’s a load of bollocks.”
