Dec Pierce’s Block Rockin Beats returned to Cork with another adrenaline-fuelled celebration of dance music’s golden era. Blending the power of a live rock band with the pulse of iconic rave anthems, the show delivered exactly what its ever-growing fanbase has come to expect —two hours of relentless energy, nostalgia and hands-in-the-air euphoria.

From the moment the lights dimmed at the Marquee, the atmosphere inside the packed marquee was electric. Pierce, best known for his Today FM radio show, has built Block Rockin Beats into one of Ireland’s most successful live music concepts, and it’s easy to see why.

Rather than simply replaying dance classics, the band reimagines them with live instrumentation, giving familiar tracks a fresh intensity while retaining everything that made them the dancefloor staples we know and love.

Rave and electronic favourites

The setlist was packed with rave and electronic favourites from artists such as The Prodigy, Faithless, Underworld, and The Chemical Brothers, each greeted like an old friend by an audience who sang every chorus and bounced through every beat, with the occasional ‘Ooh! Ooh! Ahh!’ from the crowd.

Massive tracks including Insomnia, No Good (Start the Dance), Out of Space, Sandstorm, and Right Here, Right Now became communal celebrations rather than just songs, with the crowd refusing to let the energy levels dip for even a moment.

The production had a huge role in the night’s success. A spectacular light show, pounding visuals, and crystal-clear sound transformed the Marquee into something closer to an Ibiza superclub than a concert venue. Every beat landed with impact, while the live musicians added an edge and spontaneity that simply can’t be replicated by a DJ set alone.

What makes Block Rockin Beats stand apart is its ability to unite generations.

Those who lived through the club scene of the 1990s and early 2000s relived some of the biggest nights of their youth, while younger fans embraced the timeless appeal of these electronic classics.

A few younger members of the audience bopped alongside their parents, which leads you to believe that the music they are used to hearing in the car on the school run is anything but boring.

Dec Pierce proved once again that dance music deserves its place on the live stage. His infectious enthusiasm, combined with an exceptional band and expertly-crafted production, made for one of the standout nights of this year’s Live at the Marquee series.

For anyone lucky enough to secure a ticket, this wasn’t simply a trip down memory lane — it was a reminder that great dance music never goes out of fashion. Cork came to dance, and Dec Pierce ensured nobody went home disappointed.
