Cork County Council has announced the expansion of its beach wheelchair programme with the addition of three new locations for 2026.

The service, which is carried out in partnership with Cork Sports Partnership, is now available at five beaches across Cork, providing greater access for people of all abilities to enjoy beaches and outdoor spaces of the county.

The beach wheelchairs are now available at The Warren in Rosscarbery; Redbarn beach in Youghal; Garrylucas beach in Ballinspittle, Garryvoe beach in east Cork and Claycastle beach in Youghal.

The beach wheelchairs are designed with large, low pressure wheels and a supportive seat, that enable users to move safely across sand and access the shoreline with as much ease as possible.

Dormant accounts fund

The programme has been supported through funding provided under the outdoor swimming infrastructure fund as well as the dormant accounts fund, as part of the sports inclusion disability capital programme.

Chief executive of Cork County Council Moira Murrell welcomed the expansion of the beach wheelchair programme and highlighted the importance of accessible public spaces for all.

“Cork County Council is committed to enhancing accessibility across our public amenities and ensuring that people of all abilities can participate fully in community life.

“The introduction of these beach wheelchairs removes barriers and creates new opportunities for individuals and families to enjoy our beaches together.

“We are proud to work with Cork Sports Partnership and local community partners on initiatives that support inclusion, wellbeing and quality of life.”
