A status-yellow high-temperature warning has been issued, as temperatures are set to reach 30C in Cork this week.

Met Éireann has warned of “exceptionally warm weather”, with very mild, humid conditions and the potential for thunderstorms.

The forecaster advised that potential impacts include uncomfortable sleeping conditions, as minimum night-time temperatures will be near 20C in Cork.

The warning, which covers the whole of Ireland, is valid from midday today to 9am on Friday, when rain and reduced temperatures are expected.

Cork advocate for the elderly, Paddy O’Brien, said: “We love the sun, but we in Ireland are not used to intense heat, and sitting out in the sun can be detrimental for senior citizens.

“People think it’s only a sunburn on your arms, but sickness from the sun can affect you in lots of ways.”

Mr O’Brien advised senior citizens not to sit outside for longer than five or 10 minutes, to wear a hat or other head covering when outdoors, to open windows and doors, including at night, and to dress in light clothing and use light bedclothes.

He said: “It’s very important to drink lots of liquid — a glass of water every hour even — to avoid dehydration.”

The heat will mean high UV values, Met Éireann added, advising people to follow the HSE’s SunSmart guidance, while people have also been warned to follow water-safety advice if heading to the coast or inland waterways.
