An Post has announced that a new postmaster has been appointed to take over the Sunday’s Well post office – which had been facing an uncertain future after the resignation of the previous postmaster.

Last month, An Post confirmed that the former postmaster, Finbarr O’Regan, had resigned, and the tender was being advertised.

An Post said at the time that the post office would remain open for a number of weeks, but could not say whether service will continue beyond the weekend.

Last month, a number of locals told The Echo that they had been told the post office would remain open for “one or two weeks”, but unless a new postmaster was found, it would likely close permanently after that.

On Monday, a spokesperson for An Post said there had been some good news for the people of the area.

“We are delighted to announce that we have been successful in finding a postmaster to take over the running of Sunday’s Well post office.

“The new postmaster will formally take over in the next two weeks or so and there will be no break in service to customers,” they said.

The spokesperson added that they would make a further announcement once details had been finalised.

It is the second piece of good news for Sunday’s Well in recent days, in an area which has suffered a series of premises closures over recent years, with a shop, butcher, and two restaurants all closing.

On Saturday, a new café opened beside the Sunday’s Well post office, in what was originally the post office building.

One woman on Sunday’s Well Rd on Monday, who declined to give her name, said she were very happy with the news.

“It’s fantastic to hear. The post office has been the heart of the area for so many years, and with the café opening now too, it’s great to see a bit of life in the place,” she said.
