Fianna Fáil councillor Audrey Buckley said she wanted to highlight the growing need for accessible drinking water facilities for local residents and their pets.

Cork County Council is to seek funds to provide drinking water fountains and dog water bowls at recreational and coastal locations across the Carrigaline Municipal District.

Suggested locations include the popular old Crosshaven railway walk and picturesque Robert’s Cove.

The proposal was put forward at a municipal district council meeting by Fianna Fáil councillor Audrey Buckley, who said she wanted to highlight the growing need for accessible drinking water facilities for local residents and their pets, particularly in popular walking and outdoor recreation areas.

“With more than 24,000 dogs currently registered with Cork County Council, and an estimated significant number of additional unregistered, the demand for dog-friendly public amenities continues to increase. Access to clean drinking water is something we as a council should be looking at seriously as more people than ever are using our walking trails, beaches, and outdoor amenities, often with their dogs,” Ms Buckley said.

She said simple additions such as public water fountains with dog bowls can make a meaningful difference for people enjoying these spaces while also supporting animal welfare.

Ms Buckley, who works closely with local animal shelters, said her proposal specifically identifies locations where water access already exists, making them practical starting points for consideration.

“Suggested areas should include the Crosshaven Railway Walk, near the existing water tap at Rabbit Island, Robert’s Cove water pump, and other suitable public amenities throughout the district,” she added.

Ms Buckley, who got cross-party backing from her colleagues, said such an initiative is seen not only as a convenience measure but also as part of creating healthier and more inclusive public spaces, encouraging outdoor activity while supporting responsible dog ownership.

In response, municipal district officer Denise Kidney said council officials were in favour of the project but currently do not have a specific budget for it. Nevertheless, she said they will look to get the money from somewhere. Ms Buckley suggested that the Healthy Ireland Fund would provide the finance needed.

“Sometimes small changes can have a big impact on quality of life. This is about making our public spaces more welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone — whether they walk on two legs or four,” Ms Buckley said.
