Cork GAA is considering its options after its proposal for a turning circle and bus drop-off at Páirc Uí Chaoimh was rejected by councillors, a decision that residents have welcomed.

At this week’s council meeting, the vehicular set down and drop-off circulation area at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and Marina Park on Monahan Rd narrowly failed to be approved.

The proposal needed the support of 75% of councillors as it would materially contravene a zoning objective of the Cork City Development Plan which states that the subject site is situated on lands zoned as ‘public open space’.

Cork GAA CEO Kevin O’Donovan told The Echo: “We had consulted widely and considered multiple factors in making this application.

"The design was intended to greatly improve public safety by making it easier for buses attending the stadium to allow passengers to disembark away from the public roadway on Monahan Rd, and then to turn safely. This was to help the flow of people on busy days at the county’s largest venue.

A Ballintemple Area Residents’ Association spokesperson said: “We wish Páirc Uí Chaoimh continued success in all their endeavours. We recognise the cultural and social importance of the organisation — and want the best for fans too of course.

Access well catered for

"We would like to highlight that access for all is well catered for via the existing access road and via public transport, with services stopping directly outside the stadium.

“We are very pleased so many people recognise the value of preserving Marina Park — people making submissions, senior planners, and our local councillors familiar with the situation who voted no on Monday evening.

“This park is a vital asset for the safety and enjoyment of local residents, the well-being of visitors who come to enjoy the Marina Promenade, the Park and the Greenway, and environmental integrity of the Marina area. Versions of this application have now been rejected several times. It is our hope that this decision now marks a conclusion to the matter.”
