Former Cork City player's life 'spiralled out of control' after brother's death in road crash
The solicitor said the defendant won All-Ireland titles for boxing and played soccer for Cork City and for Ireland at a very young age.
A young man with sporting prowess as a youth ended up suffering serious drug addiction over the years and now a sentencing judge has told him that the sporting arena would offer him much more enjoyment than drugs ever could.
A sentence of two months with the second month suspended was imposed on 31-year-old Tony Dolan by Judge Catherine Ryan at Cork District Court.
“I hope you go back to the sporting arena. You will get more enjoyment out of that than you will ever get out of drugs,” Judge Ryan told Mr Dolan.
Diarmuid Kelleher solicitor said: “He is hoping to come back into soccer coaching when he comes out of prison.”
The solicitor said the defendant won All-Ireland titles for boxing and played soccer for Cork City and for Ireland at a very young age. However, he saw his life spiral out of control when his brother was killed in a car crash for which there were criminal prosecutions against a number of people.
The defendant’s 16-year-old brother was killed in the criminal incident on the road in May 2010. The defendant, Tony Dolan, was only 15 when that occurred.
The solicitor said 31-year-old Dolan of Hollyhill Heights, Hollyhill, had benefitted from being in custody for the last number of weeks and that apart from keeping busy, he had become an enhanced prisoner through his efforts in custody.
Sentencing had been adjourned for a probation report after he pleaded guilty to possession of €100 cocaine and €25 cannabis at Grand Parade, Cork, on September 6 2025, against a background of multiple convictions.
