Cork county councillors have approved plans to build 63 social housing units in the coastal towns of Kinsale and Youghal.

Councillors gave the green light to officials to proceed with plans for 57 units in Kinsale and a further six in Youghal.

The Kinsale plan will involve the construction of 29 one-bed apartments to address the growing problem of accommodation for single young people and those who have separated or divorced from their former partners.

In addition, the scheme at the town’s Island Field, at Abbeylands, will consist of 15 two-bed apartments along with five two-bed houses and nine that are three-bed.

Council officials said that the development will involve a new entrance onto the R605 and R607 regional roads.

A total of 78 car parking spaces including designated accessible spaces for older people and the disabled will be created as part of the project.

A route will be developed through the site to accommodate shared pedestrian footpaths and cycleways.

There will also be two raised uncontrolled zebra crossings along the R605.

LANDSCAPED

The project also includes landscaped public open amenity spaces, a recreation area, wildflower meadows, and tree planting.

Meanwhile, the council has agreed that construction is also shortly to get underway on six single-bed apartments at Porters’ Lane in Youghal.

This has been designed again to meet the needs of single people requiring housing in that East Cork town.

It can also be used by people who have become widowed or widowered living in larger council houses and whose children have left, to downsize.

This will free up larger council houses to let those be rented by young families.

Council officials said the project will include landscaping and new planting.
