The Meitheal Mara Interfirm Dragon Boat Challenge will set sail down the River Lee in Cork city this weekend.

The annual fundraising event will take place this Saturday and will feature two 40ft-long dragon boats and teams from 16 companies across Cork compete in a paddling sprint along the traditional 250 metre distance from opposite the former R&H Hall to Cork’s Lapp’s Quay.

During the event, racers will compete in a series of heats, semi-finals and a final, culminating in one team winning the coveted Dragon Boat Challenge Trophy.

Meitheal Mara’s maritime events manager, Geri Murphy said the organisation is "delighted to see the Dragon Boat Challenge return again this year”.

“It’s a fantastic way to bring teams together on the River Lee, right in the heart of the city, for a day full of energy, teamwork and fun,” said Ms Murphy.

“Events like this are also vital in supporting Meitheal Mara’s youth and community programmes, and we’re looking forward to another great day on the water.”

Established in 2013, the Interfirm Dragon Boat Challenge serves as a fundraiser for Meitheal Mara, which is a local charity.

The organisation, which owns a community boatyard, is dedicated to promoting and fostering maritime culture and traditional skills through currach and wooden boat building.

It also provides training to people who are at risk of social exclusion such as young people, those recovering from addictions, and people living with disabilities.
