Senior chief petty officer in the Irish Navy Donal Goulding.

The family of an Irish navy senior chief petty officer, who remains in a coma after being struck by a car in Spain, said they are overwhelmed by the kindness of supporters who have raised almost €80,000 to help them.

Donal 'Donie' Goulding, a 59-year-old from Cork, was cycling with friends in Orihuela last Wednesday when they were hit by a passing vehicle. One person was treated at the side of the road, while the other three were hospitalised.

Mr Goulding was the most seriously injured of the group, and he remains in an induced coma in hospital.

Dave O’Leary, a friend and former colleague of Mr Goulding, launched a fundraiser to help Mr Goulding’s family. As of Sunday afternoon it had raised €78,915.

In an update, Mr O’Leary said the medical team attending Mr Goulding had begun to reduce some of his sedation in order to conduct further neurological tests.

“While we are hopeful, we understand that progress will likely be slow and steady," said Mr O'Leary.

“This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we all know Donie was never a sprinter "

He added that, thanks to the funds raised, Mr Goulding's family are able to remain at his side.

"Your support is making a tangible difference during this incredibly difficult time," Mr O'Leary said.

Mr Goulding is a keen charity fundraiser and was involved in a charity cycle ride from Mizen to Malin Head raising funds for a Cork hospice. He has also raised funds for hospital children’s wards.
