Newry men charged with having ladder, ropes for burglary, appear in Cork court

Three men from Newry in County Down were arrested in North Cork in the early hours of last Friday, March 27, and charged with having equipment for burglary including a ladder, ropes, a harness and torches.

After a garda objection to bail being granted to the three men at a special sitting of Cork District Court at the weekend, Judge Mary Dorgan remanded them in custody with consent to bail until Tuesday when they were all released having satisfied bail conditions which included the approval of independent sureties.

The three men were Brendan Treanor, Ronan Kelly and Niall Fegan. Their cases were adjourned until May 26 and one of the conditions against each of them was to have no contact with the others. All three were represented by Frank Buttimer, solicitor, at Cork District Court.

The charge against all of them states that on March 27 at M8 Ballinglanna North, County Cork in the District Court area of Fermoy when not at your place of residence, did have in your possession articles, namely ladder, ropes, harness, socket set, torches and reciprocating saw, with the intention that it be used in connection with burglary.

37-year-old Brendan Treanor of 9 Kelly's Road, Newry, Co. Down, was granted bail on his own bond of €2,500 with cash lodgement of €1,000, and an independent surety of €1,500 with cash lodgement of €1,000.

He was also required to reside at his home address and notify An Garda Síochána of any change of address, he is to give a mobile phone number to gardaí at which he can be contacted at all times, have no contact directly or indirectly, including through social media, with any witnesses or any co-defendants, and sign on daily at Dundalk Garda Station between 7am and 9pm.

Ronan Kelly and Niall Fegan face the same charge of having burglary-related articles. Both of them face an additional charge of trespass. 

CURTILAGE

It states that on March 27 at O’Connell Transport, Tivoli Industrial Estate, Cork, they entered the curtilage of a building, namely O’Connell Transport, Tivoli Industrial Estate, Cork, as a trespasser in circumstances giving rise to a reasonable inference that such presence was with intent to commit an offence or to unlawfully interfere with any property situated therein.

39-year-old Ronan Kelly of 95 Park View, Newtown, Cloughe, Newry, Co. Down was remanded on his own bond of €5,000 with cash lodgement of €3,000, and an independent surety of €2,000 with cash lodgement of €1,500.

He is also required to reside at his home address, notify gardaí of a change of address, give a mobile phone number to gardaí at which he can be contacted at all times, have no contact directly or indirectly, including through social media, with any witnesses or any co-defendants, and sign on daily at Dundalk Garda Station between 7am and 9pm.

27-year-old Niall Fegan of 73 Newtown Road, Camlough, Newry, was remanded on his own bail of €2,500 with cash lodgement of €1,000, and an independent surety of €1,500 with cash lodgement €500.

The arrests of Ronan Kelly, Brendan Treanor and Niall Fegan were carried out respectively by Sergeant Paul Leahy and Detective Gardaí Linda O’Keeffe and Ross McCabe.
