A spokesperson for the Kinsale and District Lions Club said the bottles “save precious time in an emergency and will also give you peace of mind”.

The Kinsale and District Lions Club recently launched a new health-led initiative aimed at providing invaluable assistance to first responders in the event of an emergency.

The initiative, entitled ‘Message In A Bottle’, is a free campaign aimed at providing small medical information tubes to members of the public which can be kept at home.

The bottles, which can be provided to prospective participants by local GPs, contain a blank form for key information, including your name, an emergency contact number, any existing health conditions and a list for current medications.

The tube also contains two stickers, one which can be stuck on your front door and another for a cupboard or other storage location inside your home where the bottle is kept.

Peace of mind

A spokesperson for the Kinsale and District Lions Club said the bottles “save precious time in an emergency and will also give you peace of mind”.

“If you are living with a chronic or critical condition, whatever your age, living alone or even living with a partner, roommate or spouse, this will benefit you,” the spokesperson said.

“We find that partners and spouses don’t always know each other’s list of medications, so it’s a simple idea that could save time and possibly your life in the event of a health emergency at home.

“We are currently working with GP surgeries so that you can pick up your bottle there.

“To spread the word and to ensure we help as many people as we can, we will be conducting short talks with clubs and community groups as well as churches, An Garda Síochána, district health services and many others across our district to get ‘Message In A Bottle’ known, being used and saving precious time and lives.

“We look forward to meeting you in one of our talks this year. Please do get in touch if your club/association would like a talk from us.”
