A car clamp that was placed on a car parked outside the Wilton pub and restaurant was smashed off and taken from the scene by one of the passengers.

At Cork District Court last week, Evan Crean was given a six-month sentence for causing criminal damage to the wheel clamp and stealing it on  September 11 2024.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis said: “At approximately 7pm on that date the clamp was placed on the vehicle but when the employee of the clamping company returned he discovered that the he clamp had been cut off the vehicle and that persons in this vehicle had left with same.

“On the downloaded CCTV, Detective Garda David Hickey saw four men at the car park of the Wilton Restaurant and Pub exiting the vehicle and entering the pub.

"They returned to the vehicle at approximately 7.50pm and observed the clamp on the vehicle. These males then left the vicinity of the car park and returned approximately 30 minutes later.

“One of the males – 23-year-old Evan Crean of 69 Saint Colmcille’s Road, Gurranabraher, Cork – was in possession of what looked like a bolt cutters. He then appears to be attempting to cut the clamp off the vehicle and eventually succeeds at approximately 8.28pm.

"The clamp is then placed against the wall of the building in front of the car park and the four males leave in this vehicle but the vehicle returns again at 8.30pm and Evan Crean exits the vehicle and takes the clamp in to the back seat of the vehicle with him.”

Solicitor Frank Buttimer said the accused was serving a longer sentence recently imposed on him at Cork Circuit Criminal Court and asked Judge Mary Dorgan to make the six-month sentence concurrent with that. The judge agreed with that application.
