Community leaders have welcomed the arrival of two new 16-seater garda community buses for the Mayfield and Gurranabraher area.

The buses will be available for community groups to book as part of the Garda Community Relations programme. Groups must contact their local community garda to secure a driver for their event well in advance.

Tony Fitzgerald, manager of the Knocknaheeny Youth Centre, thanked the local community gardaí for their work in supporting groups and said that this community bus project began way back in 2005 when the project approached various companies and State agencies, and secured €15,000.

He told The Echo: “It was a unique role for the gardaí then and we convinced the Department of Justice to take the bus under the garda fleet so that fuel and maintenance would be provided by the State.

“Buses are available now across the city, and indeed up and down the country.”

He said the last bus needed replacing: “We made various approaches to replace it, and were delighted with the news that the two new buses were on the way for the Gurranabraher and Mayfield district.”
