Cork advocate for the elderly expresses concern over Meals on Wheels ‘stigma’

Paddy O'Brien said he hoped more people will avail of their local Meals on Wheels service.

An advocate for the elderly in Cork has welcomed a €2m funding increase for Meals on Wheels, but says more can be done to reduce the stigma attached to the service.

The funding, announced recently by Tánaiste Simon Harris and minister of State for older people Kieran O’Donnell, represents a 30% increase on last year’s allocation, bringing the total dedicated funding allocation for Meals on Wheels services to €8.25m.

Speaking to The Echo, campaigner Paddy O’Brien said while he is pleased to see the increase, he believes some elderly people attach negative connotations to the service.

“By all means, I welcome this tremendous increase, but regrettably, there’s a certain stigma attached to getting Meals on Wheels,” said Mr O’Brien.

“I did Meals on Wheels for 14 years, and I remember on one occasion I was going to this house with the aluminum dish and the woman asked me to put it in a bag in the future, because she didn’t want the neighbours to know.

“People don’t want other people to know they’re getting Meals on Wheels because they might think they’re sick or don’t have the strength to cook, but I would do anything in my power to persuade people to opt for the service.

“Elderly people, especially those living on their own, they’re the most vulnerable — they skip meals because they can’t afford to eat, but with Meals on Wheels, all you need is a microwave.”

“It’s not just people who live on their own, it’s couples as well. The food is good quality, it’s nourishing, and at least you’re guaranteed one decent meal in the day.

“I hope more people will avail of this now,” he said.
