Desmond Caslte in Kinsale, a national monument since 1938, has been closed due to safety concerns since 2018.

Renovation works on Kinsale’s Desmond Castle, which has been closed to the public since 2018, are to begin later this year.

Christopher O’Sullivan, heritage minister, was recently briefed on plans for the renovations as he toured the iconic ‘French Prison’ with OPW staff.

Mr O’Sullivan described the 15th century castle as one of the most important buildings in Cork. “It will take a couple of years to complete, as the work that needs to be done is extensive, but I’m pleased this incredible building is on the path to once again being opened to the public,” he said.

Built as a customs house around 1500, the castle has a storied past: Naval prison, workhouse, local gaol, ordinance store, meeting hall, and wine museum.

It closed due to water damage.

Mr O’Sullivan added: “There are water-egress issues as well as extensive electrical works that need doing. Some parts of the interior need a good bit of work, but having seen first-hand the diligent care and passion with which the OPW are bringing to this, I am very confident.”
