Bail granted for Cork man in possession of stolen clothes he thought were 'knockoff's'

A 39-year-old man caught with sports clothing stolen from JD Sports said he bought them from a man in the English Market thinking they were “knock-off’s” as gardaí objected to bail in his case.

Gavin Sheehan of Laurel Ridge, Shanakiel, Cork, was arrested and brought before Cork District Court on a charge of handling stolen property on January 13 at Oliver Plunkett Street.

The property consisted of an adult tracksuit and an item of children’s clothing.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said the objection was partly based on evidence that the accused had been addicted to crack cocaine and may commit further offences to feed the addiction.

Judge John King granted bail to the 39-year-old. He said Mr Sheehan had given evidence that he was receiving treatment for this addiction – a piece of evidence that was not challenged by the prosecution.

He was then remanded on bail to appear again at Cork District Court on the handling charge.
