The Walking and Cycling Index 2025 for the Cork Metropolitan Area is due to be published by the NTA in early 2026.

Social Democrats councillor Niamh O’Connor asked the council to pursue a workshop or other suitable event/series of events to survey Cork City residents on their experience of walking and cycling in the city in a similar way to the recent “Masterplan for walking” initiative in Limerick. The council could use the data gleaned to guide decisions on walking and cycling infrastructure going forward, she suggested.

Gerry O’Beirne, the council’s director of infrastructure development, told her that the Walking and Cycling Index 2025 report is delivered by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) in collaboration with Cork City Council.

The data in the report comes from 2025 and will include local walking, wheeling and cycling data, modelling and an independent survey of residents that was conducted from April to August 2025.
