Murphy makes Bafta longlist for role in ‘Steve’

Cork’s Cillian Murphy has been longlisted for an award for leading actor in the 2026 British Academy Film Awards (Bafta) for his film Steve.

Previously nominated for the British Independent Film Awards 2025, the film features the Ballintemple Oscar winner as a headmaster in charge of a school for boys with societal and behavioural difficulties.

Directed by Tim Mielants, and written by Max Porter, Steve received its European premier in the Arc cinema in September.

This is Mr Murphy’s fourth Bafta nomination, having previously won Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2024 for Oppenheimer. He was also nominated for a Rising Star award in 2007 and for Best Actor in 2023 for his TV role as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders.

Other Irish names longlisted for this years Baftas include Jessie Buckley, for Best Actress for Hamnet, while her co-star Paul Mescal is longlisted in the Supporting Actor category, as is Andrew Scott for his performance in the comedy-drama Blue Moon.
