Cork court adjourns assault charge at city centre pub

The defendant accused of assaulting a woman causing her harm at a pub in Cork city was allegedly swinging a stool in another direction when it flew from his hands striking the injured party in the head.

An assault causing harm charge related to a man allegedly swinging a bar stool in a city centre pub was adjourned for a month for the district court judge to decide whether or not to accept jurisdiction.

It had been put back for CCTV to be shown to the judge but Sergeant John Dineen said that CCTV from a memory stick could not be played and that only coloured images from it were available at the moment.

Judge Mary Dorgan said she also needed to see a medical report.

The defendant accused of assaulting a woman causing her harm at a pub in Cork city was allegedly swinging a stool in another direction when it flew from his hands striking the injured party in the head.

This was the allegation outlined at Cork District Court in the case against John Daly, aged 43, of 22 Manor Road, Manor Farm, Lehenaghbeg, Cork.

He faces a charge which states that back on December 3, 2022, at Clancy’s Bar, Princes Street, Cork, he assaulted a woman causing her harm, contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

However, when the case was briefly before the court, Mr Daly spoke up saying: “That is not what happened. I was being assaulted inside the bar.”

If Judge Dorgan finds that the allegations are too serious for the district court it will be sent forward to Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

In the meantime the case has been adjourned to Cork District Court until January 29 for a final decision on where the case will be heard.
