The Crosshaven Coast Guard has completed almost 60 call outs in Cork this year, including providing assistance to a yacht in difficulty yesterday.
The Irish Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) at Valentia Island issued a call out to the Crosshaven Coast Guard at approximately 12.50pm on Saturday, requesting the team to launch and assist a yacht in difficulty off Churchbay.
In a post shared on social media, a spokesperson for the Crosshaven Coast Guard said their boat was underway “within minutes of the call to rendezvous with the yacht”.
Upon arrival, members of the crew confirmed with people aboard the yacht that they were “ok and happy to carry-on on their own”.
“They are now safely moored alongside at the Royal Cork Yacht Club,” the spokesperson said.
"It’s been a busy few days for our crews but we are always operationally ready to assist at the sound of the pager.
This callout comes following an additional launch the day prior to Lough Mahon, which resulted in a false alarm, and after the standing down of a nine-day search and recovery mission, which was undertaken in conjunction with members of the Guileen Coast Guard, An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, Cork City Fire Brigade, Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery, Mallow Search and Rescue and the Blackwater Sub Aqua Club.
The search and recovery mission, which commenced on December 18, was launched following reports of a person entering the water at Brian Boru Bridge in Cork city centre.
In a post shared on social media, a spokesperson for the Crosshaven Coast Guard said members of the Mallow Search and Rescue dived on a location of interest on Friday, and recovered one person from the water.
“This was a huge team effort and has not stopped until we had closure,” the spokesperson said.
“Our condolences to the persons family at this very sad time."
