Taoiseach hails decade of success at Cork Gaelcholáiste
Taoiseach Micheál Martin speaking at Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin's ten-year anniversary.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin was guest of honour at a gathering before Christmas marking a decade since Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin opened its doors to its first pupils.
The campaign to establish a new post-primary school for the area got under way as far back as 2008.
The then department of education and skills approved the school in 2013 under the patronage of the County Cork VEC, now the Cork Education and Training Board (ETB).
Two years later, the first intake of 17 pupils started at the school, housed in temporary accommodation at Waterpark House.
From those humble beginnings, Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin has gone on to build an enviable reputation for academic excellence, with consistently high state exam results and earning national recognition at the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The school now caters for over 300 students in its permanent state-of-the-art home, part of a wider education complex serving more than 1,000 learners.
Away from the classroom, the school has excelled in debating, music, and sport — including Munster and county titles in Gaelic football, camogie, ladies football, and hurling. The school’s vibrant music tradition and commitment to Irish culture have also enriched the lives of students and the wider community.
The Gaelcholáiste has played a vital role in promoting the Irish language, offering a fully inclusive curriculum and welcoming students from both Irish and English-medium primary schools.
Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Mr Martin said the school stands as a “shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision”.
He added: “Over the past decade, this school has not only delivered academic excellence but has also fostered a deep appreciation for our language and heritage.
“I congratulate the students, staff, parents, and all who have contributed to this remarkable journey.
“The success of Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin is a testament to the power of perseverance and partnership. I am confident that its next decade will be even more inspiring.”
Cork ETB chief Denis Leamy said that over the past decade the school has become “synonymous with excellence”.
He added: “Our students have excelled academically, with many achieving top Leaving Certificate results. They have shone in science competitions, debating, music, and sport, including sweeping Cork Colleges GAA titles.
“These achievements reflect not only talent but the ethos of respect, fairness, and integrity that defines this school.
“The €34m investment by the Department of Education and Youth in the Carrigaline campus reflects a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and the highest standards of education.”
The Gaelcholáiste’s journey from Waterpark House to its permanent home is a story of partnership and ambition, ensuring that Irish-medium education thrives in the region.
As Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin enters its second decade, the school community remains dedicated to nurturing every learner and strengthening Irish-medium education across Cork.
The next 10 years promise continued growth, achievement, and service to the young people of Carrigaline and beyond.
