A 58-year-old man who has clocked up his 185th conviction for being drunk and a danger, now holds “the world record in Cork,” the judge said.

Francis Kearns of Mount Rivers, Carrigaline, pleaded guilty to his latest offence of being so intoxicated that he was a danger to himself or others.

Judge Mary Dorgan said that the frustrating thing about such offences was that they only carried fines as a penalty.

The judge lamented the fact there was no custodial option for repeat offences — something that she said needed to be addressed by legislation.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said that on April 17, Mr Kearns was drunk and a danger at Main St, Ballincollig, Co Cork.

Diarmuid Kelleher solicitor said that at least the offence did not escalate to one of engaging in threatening behaviour.

Judge Dorgan fined him €200 but appealed to him to stay out of trouble.

“Really and truly, you are causing wreck around the place,” Judge Dorgan said.
