Mr Canty is now developing a TV project called Robot, based around the popular character from the movie Christy, above.

Christy, filmed in Knocknaheeny, directed by Brendan Canty, and written by Alan O’Gorman, has been named the best Irish film by the Dublin Film Critics Circle, while Mr Canty also won the Best Irish Breakthrough category.

Mr Canty told The Echo that it was amazing to be honoured by professional critics. “It’s super humbling, especially in my first feature,” he said.

“I hope it opens doors and allows me to go and make more stuff because I absolutely adored making this film. It was everything I wanted it to be. It really was a community project and it meant so much to so many people.”

Mr Canty is developing a TV project called Robot, based around the popular character from Christy, about living with disability as a rapper on Cork’s northside. “We’ve gotten a bit of development money from Netflix and BBC to write a TV show based on that idea, which is super exciting, so hopefully that will be coming to the screen in the next few years,” he said.
