Judge refuses jurisdiction in alleged assault case in Cork bar

A district court judge watched a video of an alleged assault by a man on a woman on the dancefloor of Cyprus Avenue in Cork and decided that it was too serious to be heard at that court.

Judge Mary Dorgan said that after seeing the video from various cameras over the dancefloor at the venue in Cork city, that she was
refusing to accept jurisdiction.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that it could be dealt with at district court level.

Judge Dorgan adjourned the case for further DPP directions on February 10, 2026.

Daniel Wyse, aged 22, of 21 Killiney Heights, Knocknaheeny, is charged with assault causing harm to the young woman by allegedly punching her in the face from behind, on January 29, 2024.

Garda Darren Ronan charged him with a count of assault causing harm.
