Funeral arrangements have been announced for a 62-year-old man who died in a house fire in the city in the early hours of Sunday.
Gary McCarthy, 62, was found unresponsive in his home on Noonan’s Rd on the southside of the city, just after 3.30am, and was pronounced dead shortly afterward in Cork University Hospital.
Neighbours in the Greenmount area told The Echo that Mr McCarthy had been a very kind and caring person, who doted on his family.
“He was an adoring grandfather, adoring, and you’d often see him out playing ball with his grandkids outside the house,” one woman said.
Another neighbour said Mr McCarthy was a decent neighbour, who always looked out for the people around.
“He was always looking after his elderly neighbours, always looking out for people, and you’d always see him on the green with his own grandchildren,” she said. “He was a lovely man, very young in himself, and he loved cars, you’d always see him cleaning the car outside the house.”
Mr McCarthy is survived by his wife, Caroline, née Bridgeman, and his children, Ross, Donna, Kalvin, Dylan, and Tristan, his grandchildren, Caitlin, Warren, Rhys, Finley, Lewis, Ella, Logan, and Kai, and a large circle of family and friends.
Reposing at Forde’s Funeral Home, South Gate Bridge, from 5pm to 6pm today, with Requiem Mass at 12pm tomorrow at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, The Lough.
Funeral after to St John’s Cemetery, Ballinrea.
