A Cork Active Retirement bowls team took home the top prize for the third year in succession at the annual national bowls competition.
The competition, now in its 13th year, took place across three days at the INEC Arena in Killarney, Co Kerry.
Throughout the competition, 64, four-person active retirement bowls teams, including eight from Cork, competed across the large and small bowls competitions.
This year saw members Breda Treacy, Denis Mulcahy, Dennis Heffernan and Liam Hickey of Midleton’s Magpies Active Retirement bowls team once again win the 2025 Large Bowls Cup.
The team were presented the award by Active Retirement Ireland national president, Mai Quaid and CEO, Fran Brennan at a special gala ball.
Other Cork teams that took part in the competition include the Superbowlers, Rebel Bowls, Owenacurra, Mardyke Rebels, Mardyke Giants, as well as Cathedral 1, and Cathedral 2.
Speaking at the awards presentation, Ms Brennan congratulated all the competition participants in this year’s event.
“Well done to all teams who participated in this year’s National Bowls Competition and special congratulations to our finalists across the large and small bowls tournaments,” said Ms Brennan.
“This tournament is a celebration of older people and their right to live independent, full lives in which they can stay socially connected and be active participants in their communities.
“The more than 450 competitors, volunteer officials, and spectators who have joined us in Killarney exemplify the drive and self-determination of older people to live their best life in later life.
“We are all ageing, and it cannot be too much to ask that people in Ireland be supported to age well, with dignity, independence and equality.”
