A man in his 50s has been arrested by Gardaí after a man in his 30s died following a stabbing in Hollyhill in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the Hollyville estate at approximately 4.30am following reports of a disturbance involving two individuals.

A 38-year-old man was treated at the scene before being taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH), where he was later pronounced dead. He has been named locally as Mark O’Connell, originally from Farranree.

A second man, aged in his mid-50s, was arrested at the scene, and is being detained at a garda station in Cork under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The office of the State pathologist was notified, and a postmortem was due to take place. The scene of the incident was preserved for technical examination, and gardaí yesterday began making door-to-door inquiries in the area.

Speaking to The Echo, Fianna Fáil councillor for the Cork City North West ward, Tony Fitzgerald, said the northside community was “shocked and saddened” by the incident.

“The Hollyville estate is a very quiet area,” said Mr Fitzgerald. “People have woken up very shocked and saddened to hear of the tragedy that happened overnight.

“It’s really a very, very sad morning in Hollyhill on the northside of the city.”

Fine Gael councillor for the Cork City North West ward, Damian Boylan, said the sadness was compounded by the proximity to the festive season.

“For this to happen just weeks before Christmas, it is the epitome of a tragedy,” said Mr Boylan. “The northside is such a small place, we all know each other, so very quickly this will have gotten around, and it will hurt a lot of people.

“My heart goes out to them, and the extended family and friends of everyone involved too — it’s just so tragic.”

Investigation

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation from the incident room at Gurranabraher Garda Station, and a family liaison officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Anyone who may have camera footage, including dashcam recordings, who were in the vicinity of Hollyville between 3.30am and 4.30am, asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on (021) 4946200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
