Taoiseach opens 'impressive' new wing at Cork school

The Vicarstown National School extension includes a special educational needs suite, two mainstream classrooms, and a multi-purpose hall to support the evolving needs of pupils.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has opened a major new extension at Vicarstown National School.

Mr Martin said it was a transformative development that would enhance educational facilities for the local community. “I am delighted to officially open this impressive new extension at Vicarstown National School.

“It is a shining example of community spirit, educational ambition, and a deep commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.”

The extension includes a special educational needs (SEN) suite, two mainstream classrooms, and a spacious, multi-purpose hall, designed to support the evolving needs of pupils.

Future-proofed

The board of management said the investment would ensure that Vicarstown National School was fully future-proofed, continuing its long tradition of providing excellence in education at the heart of the community.

The ceremony was attended by school principal Peter Mulcahy, Bishop William Crean, Fr Paddy Buckley, Fr Patrick McCarthy, and Lorraine O’Regan, who is chairperson of the board of management, as well as members of the board of management, staff, the parents’ association, pupils, and a number of local political representatives.

Principal Peter Mulcahy said the extension was a milestone for the school community.

“It reflects our commitment to inclusion, innovation, and providing the very best for every child, today and for generations to come,” he said.

Mr Mulcahy added that Vicarstown National School extended its deep gratitude to the Department of Education, the school patrons, and the wider local community, whose support, belief, and collaboration had, he said, been instrumental in bringing the project to life.
