A new mural, honouring Hind Rajab, a Palestinian girl who was killed in Gaza last year, has been revealed at Izz Cafe in Cork.

The painting, created by international mural artist, Blanca Cabrera Rice, comes as a tribute to Miss Rajab, who was five years old when she died, as well as all the other lives lost in Gaza as a result of the ongoing conflict.

Ms Cabrera Rice, who is an Argentinean-Irish artist and art teacher based in Cork city, is known under the pseudonym of Libertad, which means Liberty.

Speaking about the mural, which was unveiled at Izz Cafe on George’s Quay this week, said she was honoured to work on such “a meaningful commission”.

"Izz Cafe is a lovely place that has long stood as a symbol of Palestinian culture and resilience in Cork city,” said Ms Cabrera Rice.

“I was invited to repaint their iconic design, which for years has represented their identity and struggle: ‘Free Palestine. Make Hummus Not War’.

“A statement that is even more significance today, as the world witnesses the ongoing genocide and suffering by the Palestinian people.

“In addition to restoring this powerful emblem, I was also asked to create a new mural depicting the story of Hind Rajab, inspired by Kevin Copeland’s illustration ‘Her name was Hind’.

“Painting this piece was both an honour and a heartbreaking experience, sharing the tragic story of Hind and her family, and to ensure their memory is not forgotten.

“As an artist I always believed that art has a responsibility beyond aesthetics, for me, it is a form of resistance, remembrance and justice," she added.

“Through my work, I strive to keep memories alive and to stand in solidarity with those who fight for freedom and dignity.
