Angie Benhaffaf, a mother from Carrigtwohill, has been named the Cork Lidl Family Carer of the Year 2025.
The Lidl Family Carer of the Year Awards celebrate those whose dedication and compassion make a difference in the lives of the people they care for.
For nearly 16 years, Ms Benhaffaf has cared for her twin sons, Hassan and Hussein, who were born conjoined and have faced major medical challenges since birth.
At her twelve-week scan, Ms Benhaffaf was told there was a high chance that neither would survive, but she refused to give up and has devoted herself to their care, through through 75 surgeries and long hospital stays.
Thanks to her support, they have become outstanding para athletes, representing Ireland and winning medals in wheelchair basketball and athletics.
Alongside caring for her family, she has raised over €100,000 for children’s charities through her annual Cork Wears Red Annual Charity Lunch.
Catherine Cox, head of communications and policy with Family Carers Ireland, said: “Family carers are the silent supporters of so many households across Ireland. They juggle multiple responsibilities, often at great personal cost, driven by love.
“Too often, their work takes place behind closed doors, unseen, unsupported and unacknowledged. These awards are about visibility and respect for the vital work that they do.”
Christine McIntyre, senior partnership and events manager at Lidl Ireland, added: “Angie Benhaffaf is a wonderful example of the compassion and commitment that exist in homes and communities all over Ireland.”
