Four fishermen were rescued in West Cork last night after their boat ran into trouble near Castletownbere.

The Castletownbere RNLI launched a rescue operation on Wednesday night just after 8:30pm following a Mayday call.

The fishing vessel, which had departed from Dinish Wharf and was heading toward Castletownbere Harbour, struck a post inside the harbour and began taking on water rapidly.

A spokesperson for the Castletownbere Coast Guard said: “At 20:47 Castletownbere Coast Guard were tasked to an incident in Castletownbere harbour to reports of a boat in distress.

“After arrival on scene Castletownbere Lifeboat and local vessels had come to the aid of the crew and everyone was reported safe and well.”

All four crew members were safely taken aboard the lifeboat before the trawler sank approximately 15 minutes later.

“Conditions were very good in the harbour at the time but unfortunately the vessel could not be saved," the spokesperson said.

The fishermen were then brought safely back to Castletownbere Harbour.
