Cork County Council has said that crews will carry out repairs to a sinkhole, which has appeared along the R600, “as soon as possible”.

As a result of the sinkhole, located along the R600 between Timoleague and Kinsale, motorists travelling along the road are urged to take caution as traffic has been reduced to a single lane.

Speaking to The Echo, a spokesperson for Cork County Council said that members of the local authority are “aware of the depression on the R600”.

“The road is currently reduced to single line traffic,” the spokesperson said.

“Cork County Council are currently assessing the situation with a view to carrying out repairs as soon as possible.

“It will be necessary to close the road to carry out the repairs.”

Timoleague native and Fine Gael councillor for the Bandon-Kinsale local electoral area, John Michael Foley, said the sinkhole is “not ideal”.

“The roads are generally quite good in the area, because it is on the Wild Atlantic Way, but it [the sinkhole] is a result of coastal erosion,” said Mr Foley.

“The sea has knocked a piece of the road or sea wall boundary, and water has come up underneath.

“It has caused a little disruption, nothing major, but it’s not ideal.

“We have quite a good roads team around here and they’re good to get things repaired.

“I’ll be keeping the pressure on to make sure it’s done," he added.
