The county mayor said breastfeeding is a natural part of family life, and that mothers should feel confident and supported to feed their babies anywhere.

Businesses, organisations, community groups, and public buildings across Cork are being encouraged to ‘go the extra mile’ to support breastfeeding mothers.

Under the umbrella of National Breastfeeding Week, which runs until Tuesday, Cork County Council has joined forces with Healthy Ireland and the HSE for We’re Breastfeeding Friendly in County Cork, an initiative aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of mothers, babies, and their families.

Participating premises have received a resource pack, including a window sticker and information materials, to help staff and customers to create a supportive and welcoming environment for mothers.

Hailing the initiative, Mayor of the County of Cork, Mary Linehan-Foley, said breastfeeding is a natural part of family life, and that mothers should feel confident and supported to feed their babies anywhere.

At the launch of We're Breastfeeding Friendly by Cork County Council, in partnership with Healthy Ireland and the HSE, were Michelle Burke with baby Alison, Niall O'Callaghan Healthy Ireland Co-ordinator at Cork County Council with county mayor Cllr Mary Linehan Foley.

“I am very pleased that Cork County Council is taking a leadership role in promoting this campaign, ensuring that businesses and public services across the county are equipped to provide a warm welcome to breastfeeding families,” said Ms Linehan-Foley.

“I am also very proud Cork County Council is being a positive role model in this initiative by rolling it out in many of its buildings, including many of the libraries.”

Gabrielle O’Keeffe, head of health wellbeing and strategy in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare at the HSE, said research shows mothers feel best supported when staff are informed, when there are comfortable spaces available, and when small gestures, such as a glass of water or ease of access with a buggy, are offered to them.

“The We’re Breastfeeding Friendly initiative helps create those environments, making everyday life easier for parents and families,” said Ms O’Keeffe.
