Recently the Ben Flahive Memorial Tournament was held at Douglas GAA Club.

The tournament is aimed at boys in the U14 football grade and is held in memory of former Garda Siochána member, Ben Flahive, who was a member of the club.

This tournament has been running for a number of years and eight teams took part this time.

Douglas Dubh, Douglas Glas, Erin’s Own, St Finbarr’s, Inniscarra, Glanmire, Mallow and Shamrocks were the sides who lined out this year.

All the games were competitive and after a great day of sport Erin’s Own won the Shield and Glanmire emerged victorious in the Cup competition, winning the trophy for the third year in a row.

The cups and medals were presented on the day by Ben’s wife Pauline, and his two sons, Brian and Kevin, the latter a member of the Cork senior football panel up to this season when he headed to Australia.

The organisers would like to thank all who helped out on the day and Douglas GAA Club for hosting this annual tournament in memory of Ben. Like other years it was deemed a great day by all taking part.

Cllr Horgan calls for services parity across bus networks

Labour Party Cllr Peter Horgan has called for services parity across the Douglas and Rochestown bus networks as the 223 timetable remained untouched.

“I fully welcome the move to double decker services,” said Cllr Horgan.

“It is after significant advocacy with Bus Éireann management and addressing route issues before and during the summer. Increasing capacity is badly needed on this.

“They’ve started the double deckers on parts of the route and that will increase day by day. I know there are issues with Carrigmahon and I will be reaching out to the county council on the matter to try and push through the changes needed.

“It underpins the need for the city and county committee to be convened. Our public transport doesn’t stop at the local authority borders so we must work laterally to remove any obstacles that hinder better public transport.

“If we want more people to take the bus either for commuting or leisure purposes we need to provide additional services.

“Safety concerns on long walking routes at night for students was a repetitive concern raised with me. I still believe that it must be frontloaded under BusConnects to become at the very least every half hour.” Cllr Horgan has also called for an expansion of the public bike scheme to the Douglas and Rochestown areas.

Figures released to Mr Horgan last year showed an increase in bike journeys from 116,009 in 2022 to 150,293 in 2023.

“A 30% increase in bike trips in Cork is testament that the scheme is performing strongly but we now need to see the expansion happen.

“We’ve been calling for this since 2018. While it is welcome that a review is underway for the expansion of the scheme, it is vital that the review puts the South-East Ward front and centre on the expansion priority list.

“What is critical is the expansion of the scheme southside towards Blackrock and Mahon and out to Douglas and Rochestown, creating a triangle of its own bike network that also subs into the city.

“We in the Labour Party will continue to advocate for a fuller, bolder public bike scheme in Cork city that can serve everyone.”
