The Citizens Information service (CIS) held events at a number of centres across Cork recently to celebrate its 50-year anniversary.

The Lord Mayor of Cork Fergal Dennehy hosted a civic reception at City Hall on Thursday September 18.

The event was attended by staff and former staff from across the region, scheme workers and volunteers, current and former board members, as well as local dignitaries.

Mr Dennehy paid tribute by saying that Citizens Information “has been a cornerstone of support for individuals and families across Cork for half a century.”

“It has empowered people to understand their rights, access vital services, and navigate life’s challenges with dignity and confidence.”

Also in Cork city centre, Yvonne Rayner, the Cornmarket Street development manager, hosted an open afternoon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Citizens Information Service on September 9.

Representatives from many local and community organisations were in attendance, including Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Cork Deaf Association, and Cork Migrant Centre.

In Youghal, Ciara O’Gorman, development manager with the Citizens Information service, hosted representitives from organaisations such as Barnardos and Youghal Community Radio.

BANTRY CIS

The Bantry CIS team hosted a coffee morning on September 17 which was attended by representatives from a wide range of community, voluntary and statutory organisations from around West Cork.

Among those in attendance were West Cork Beacon, Employability West Cork, National Learning Network, and St Vincent de Paul.

President of Ireland Michael D Higgins offered congratulations as the Citizens Information Service marked the milestone of 50 years of service to the Irish public.

He acknowledged “the important role that Citizens Information has played, and continues to play, in fostering an inclusive, informed, and participative Republic.”

“Since its establishment 50 years ago, when on July 8, 1975 the first 25 Citizens Information centres were registered at a ceremony in the Burlington Hotel, your organisation has been a vital resource for generations of people seeking clarity, assistance and support.”
