Community coffee morning

For World Mental Health Day on Friday, October 10, Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project CLG, Ballyphehane Community Centre, Cork City Partnership, and Cork City Council are working together to highlight mental health and wellbeing in the community with an event called Community Connections over Cuppas and Chats.

The public is invited to attend the event at Ballyphehane Community Centre, Tory Top Rd, from 11am to 1pm.

“We are encouraging people to come along, meet up, enjoy some music, treats, connect with each other and have a fun morning over a cup of tea or coffee. All are welcome to attend,” said Ballyphehane Togher CDP in a post on social media.

New pedestrian crossings

Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has welcomed news of plans for pedestrian crossings in Ballyphehane.

The proposed crossings will be situated on Friars Walk at the entrance to Loretto Park, and on the Grange Rd.

“Really welcome news that the council have informed us they are proposing to progress pedestrian crossings at these locations,” said Mr Ó Laoghaire. “Myself and councillor Fiona Kerins have been pushing the need for a pedestrian crossing at Friars Walk for several years. There are a huge amount of pedestrians going back and forth to the park, Presentation School, Hope Childcare, the shops, the Gaelscoil, and the library, but no pedestrian crossing for some 800m between the church and St Patrick’s Rd. This will be very welcome indeed.

“Likewise, Tramore Valley Park is a terrific amenity, and the Mount Vernon Park bridge is a huge addition, but there is so much traffic on the Grange Rd that it is difficult to get across.

“Very positive news that the council are progressing pedestrian crossings at these locations.

Mr Ó Laoghaire said construction works “are planned to commence in the first quarter of 2026 provided NTA funding remains in place”.

Tidy Towns ‘thank you’

Ballyphehane Tidy Towns welcomed 32 Italian students from The Learning Abroad Company as honorary members of the team last week.

“They learned all about the work we do to keep our community clean and green and even rolled up their sleeves to help out,” said a Tidy Towns spokesperson.

“As a wonderful thank you, they kindly gifted us a Woodies voucher, which will go straight back into future projects for the ‘Hane’. A huge grazie mille to our new Italian friends for their hard work and generosity!”
