A motorcyclist who died in an accident at a motocross practice day on the Vernon Mount Track in Cork city has been named locally as Stephen McCarthy. Picture Denis Minihane.

A motorcyclist who died in an incident at a motocross practice day on the Vernon Mount Track in Cork city has been named locally as Stephen McCarthy.

The incident occurred at 12.45pm yesterday at the track on the southside of Cork city. Gardaí and paramedics attended at the scene where Mr McCarthy was pronounced dead. 

He was in his forties and married with children.

Mr McCarthy was a very well regarded business owner who lived at Cullen in Riverstick, Co Cork. He was a native of Skibbereen, Co Cork.

His body was taken to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem examination. Garda forensic collision investigators have examined the scene of the crash. 

Funeral arrangements will be finalised in the coming days. An inquest will occur in due course.
