It’s all systems go for Culture Night in Carrigaline tonight, with events and exhibitions on in six different locations from 4pm to 11pm.

The Carrigaline Men’s Shed are very involved in this year’s Culture Night, constructing a raised stage for the occasion which they will erect in the Owenabue car park.

The Men’s Shed choir will perform on the stage at 5pm, and the craftsmen will have an attractive stand in SuperValu Mall from 4pm. Members have been invited to participate in the parade, and also to help with stewarding on the night.

The programme on the main stage continues until 9pm with a short break for the parade.

The cultural parade, led by the Pipe Band, starts at 6.45pm from the church, with 15 groups participating. The Pipe Band will also give a performance in the Owenabue car park.

The front of the Owenabue car park will be closed from 2pm and Main St will be closed from 6pm.

The music trail consists of six locations from 4pm until 6pm, and later on, seven musicians featuring their own original music will perform in the GAA pavilion from 9pm to 11pm.

There will be a photographic exhibition in the Carrigaline Library and SuperValu Mall, which will be a hive of activity with the Men’s Shed display, the Monday Morning Stitchers, Carrigaline Farmhouse Cheese and more.

Also in the library, there will be a bilingual play Mamaí Gé by Cois Laoi productions at 4pm and readings by local authors from 5.15pm.

In the Lions Youth Centre, Carraig Ag Caint will hold three “Introduction to Irish” sessions from 4pm to 6pm, and the youth centre will hold music therapy workshops with Danny Dineen from 4.15pm to 6.00pm.

Art will be on display at the Carrigaline Court Hotel, SuperValu Mall, and on a number of shop windows on Main St.

Pipers Amusements will be located in the Owenabue car park.

All are welcome to Culture Night and all events are free.

Social swimming club

The Carrigaline Social Swimming Club has resumed its weekly gathering at the pool in the Carrigaline Court Hotel.

The club, now in its 23rd year, meets every Thursday evening from 9.30pm.

A spokesperson said the weekly sessions are a great way to get some healthy exercise and enjoy some fun in a friendly setting, that also includes a jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room.

“New members are most welcome and you don’t have to be able to swim. Just give it a try and enjoy,” they said.

Full club membership cost €80 or people can dip their toes in the water for €10 per night. First time visitors are free.

“So give it a try and get active this autumn,” said the spokesperson.

Lions Club cycle for cancer

While registration for the 34th annual Carrigaline Lions Club cycle classic, which takes place on Saturday, September 27 is well up on last year, more entries are invited and most welcome.

Well done to the Lions Club for organising the event in aid of three cancer charities: Cork ARC Cancer Support House, Marymount University Hospice, and Childhood Cancer Ireland, and your participation makes all the difference.

The classic starts at the Lions Club and there are three distances 100km, 50km, and 30km.

The classic cycle is a great social occasion at which cyclists enjoy each other’s company, the scenery, and the hospitality en route and at the line stop, all in a good cause.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just up for the challenge, now’s the time to get involved.

Men’s Shed

The Carrigaline Men’s Shed lost one of its loyal members September 4, following the death of Noel Scanlon, RIP.

Noel, a former committee member, was a regular at the Shed. He always made himself available for stewarding and was a devoted choir member. The Men’s Shed provided a guard of honour at his funeral and the choir sang at his requiem Mass and at the crematorium.

A large delegation from Mayfield Men’s Shed recently paid a visit to the Carrigaline Shed. They were impressed with the variety of activities in the Carrig Men’s Shed and enjoyed a chat and exchange of ideas and experiences over a cupán tae.

They invited Carrigaline men to visit their Shed and expressed an interest in a get together with both Shed choirs. The latest proposal on the Carrigaline men’s agenda is to have Rang Gaeilge, a conversational Irish course starting soon.

The Shed woodturners and carpenters will have a craft display in the SuperValu Mall.
