The Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Fergal Dennehy, has asked that people consider becoming blood donors, as the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) says it is facing increasing demand from hospitals across the region.
Mr Dennehy spoke to The Echo after he recently visited St Finbarr’s Hospital blood clinic to make a donation.
“I was truly delighted to visit the clinic today and to support such an essential and vital service,” he said.
“I urge the people of Cork to consider donating blood, especially as we face a nationwide shortage.
“We never know when we, or someone we love, might need this life-saving resource, so I encourage everyone to visit their local donation centre.
“The staff are fantastic and there to assist you every step of the way,” Mr Dennehy added.
“Please, make the effort to donate — it could make all the difference.”
Supply under pressure
The IBTS has recently expanded its capacity at the hospital clinic to meet rising needs, but supply remains under pressure. In particular, an extra 200 units of O negative blood are urgently needed at the clinic over the next two weeks.
Julianne Kelly, IBTS donor services manager, also highlighted the vital role Cork businesses can play.
“We are asking members of the public in Cork to consider becoming blood donors,” she said.
“We need the support of Cork companies, many Cork employers have younger workforces, and we urgently need more young donors to build a sustainable blood supply.
“By encouraging employees to give blood, local companies can make a direct and life-saving contribution to the community,” she said.
“We are perfectly located a stone’s throw from the city centre, with free parking on site and we are more than willing to facilitate group bookings for companies.”
