Macroom treatment plant's 4,600 customers must boil water before use

Following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), Uisce Éireann issued the boil water notice to protect the health of the approximately 4,697 customers supplied by the town's public water supply.

A boil water notice has been issued for the Macroom area by Uisce Éireann, the latest in a series of boil water notices going back more than two years for the mid-Cork town.

The notice, which was issued today, was issued as a result of operational issues at the Macroom Water Treatment Plant.

Following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), Uisce Éireann issued the boil water notice to protect the health of the approximately 4,697 customers supplied by the town's public water supply.

Niall O’Riordan of Uisce Éireann acknowledged the impact this latest notice will have on the Macroom area and assured customers that the utility is working to safely lift this notice as soon as possible.

“We regret any inconvenience caused for impacted customers once again.

"The notice, caused by operational issues at the treatment plant, has been put in place to protect the health of customers on the Macroom Public Water Supply.

“Public health is our number one priority and we would like to assure customers that we are working to lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible.”

In April of this year, a €6.5m upgrade of the Macroom Water Treatment Plant commenced. This project aims to address the risks to water quality, and the frequent boil water notices the people of Macroom have experienced over the last number of years.

The works are being carried out by Glanua on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.

Customers can check if their property is included by clicking on water.ie and entering the property’s Eircode or by calling the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline on 1800 278 278.
