A coalition of trade unions, student unions, civil society groups, and political parties has called a city centre protest to demand urgent Government action on the deepening housing crisis.

According to the most recent figures, the number of people living in emergency accommodation in Cork has increased by 20% in the last 12 months.

One of the organisers, Joe Kelly from Siptu said families with two incomes were shut out from the market by spiralling housing costs.

“Many union members are wondering the point in working,” he said.

The ‘Raise the Roof’ demonstration will begin at 2.30pm on Saturday, October 4, at the National Monument on the Grand Parade.
