Young man remanded in custody by Cork court as no one posted €100 bail

The defendants offences included kicking a wing mirror off a car, shoplifting in Cork city, and failing to show up in court for his cases.
A young man with no previous convictions who is in custody because he could not raise the €100 for his bail pleaded guilty to all charges against him on Monday
His offences include kicking a wing mirror off a car, shoplifting in Cork city, and failing to show up in court for his cases.
Patrick Costin, aged 18, of no fixed address, has been living recently with Cork Simon Community.
Solicitor Joseph Cuddigan said the accused man was pleading guilty to all charges against him.
On April 20, at Centra on Patrick Street, he stole €21 worth of beer.
On June 21, at Tesco, Paul Street, he stole vodka, totalling €76.
On July 12, he stole two bottles of vodka valued €77 at Marks and Spencer.
One week later at The Offie, Douglas Street, Cork, he stole cider valued €19.
Then last week, on August 24, he smashed the wing mirror off a woman’s car on Patrick Street.
And, he twice failed to appear in court for his cases.
Mr Cuddigan said: “He had been residing with his family until January and then, for some reason, he tells me he could not go back home. He says he is trying to cut down on drink. I think he needs counselling.”
Judge Mary Dorgan said: “I will put it back for a fortnight for a probation report and we can finalise the matter then.”
Patrick Costin was remanded in custody with consent to bail until September 15.
Mr Cuddigan said that when the young man appeared before a remand hearing last week, he was granted bail in the sum of €100, but in the absence of anyone to post bail for him, he has been in custody since then and continued to be in custody yesterday.
