The Cork public have been warned of growing wasp activity, as Rentokil reported an almost 45% increase in call-outs in the first half of this year compared to the same time period of 2024.
The company has reported a 44.92% rise in wasp activity in those six months.
Rentokil is warning the public to be cautious as the country moves into late summer, which is peak season for wasp activity.
According to the firm, wasps are most active during the summer months, with the common wasp and German wasp responsible for most stings in Ireland.
In early summer, wasps mainly prey on other insects and feed on sugary secretions from their larvae.
As summer progresses and larvae mature, wasps turn to human food as an alternative source of carbohydrates. This means that encounters are more frequent, raising the risk of painful stings and allergic reactions.
Painful stings
Colm Moore, regional technical manager for Rentokil, said wasp stings can cause more than temporary pain.
“They can lead to swelling, allergic reactions, and considerable distress, especially for children. Prevention is the best approach,” added Mr Moore.
“By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the likelihood of wasp problems while enjoying the outdoors.”
Precautions include staying calm, avoiding frantic movements, avoiding sweet fragrances, wearing subdued colours, covering bins, covering drinks and food, and cleaning up promptly..
Rentokil has introduced the EcoCatch wasp trap, a sustainable and non-toxic control solution for outdoor settings.
Rentokil also warned that climate change and warmer temperatures are likely to increase wasp activity, extend the pest season, and make infestations more common.
