An Comisiún Pleanála’s decision comes amid multiple appeals by nearby residents, including the Dunkettle Residents Association.

An Comisiún Pleanála has upheld Cork City Council’s decision to grant permission for 550 homes in Dunkettle, Glanmire, despite an appeal by local residents.

O’Flynn Construction was granted permission by the local authority in April for the homes, part of phase one of a larger project, which aims to see more than 1,000 homes developed at the site. The developers stated in planning documentation: “The proposed development will function as a natural extension to the town of Glanmire by consolidating development in the area and ensuring the retention of a compact settlement.”

Demolition

The plans include the demolition of existing structures at the site and the construction of 394 houses — a mixture of two-, three-, and four-bed semi-detached and terraced units — as well as 156 apartment/duplex units, a mixture of one- and two-bed units in 10 blocks ranging in height from two to six storeys.

A creche with capacity for 144 children and three commercial units are also included in the proposal, as well as a new vehicular access and a new pedestrian access, footpaths, cycle lanes, bicycle and car parking, and upgrades to road markings.

An Comisiún Pleanála’s decision comes amid multiple appeals by nearby residents, including the Dunkettle Residents Association.

Over 20 objections had also been made to the initial planning application with the council, with locals raising concerns about the L2998’s capacity to take more traffic, an absence of public transport serving the development’s location, and wildlife in the area.
