Plans have been lodged for 114 apartments at White’s Cross in Ballyvolane, on the site of a former storage yard.

Developer Whitestone Corner Properties Ltd has applied for permission for a large-scale residential development, the demolition and removal of the building, and the construction of three apartment blocks, ranging in height from four to five storeys.

There will be 114 apartment units — 45 one-bed, 43 two-bed, and 26 three-bed — and works including footpaths, cycle paths, car and bicycle parking, open spaces, drainage, fencing, lighting, a new footpath, cycle path, and bus stop along Ballyhooly Rd.

Access to the site will be via a new vehicle access point and three new pedestrian entrances. The development site is situated on the R614 Ballyhooly Rd, identified as a residential neighbourhood in the Cork City Development Plan, 2022-2028.

The plans will be well served by bus, the developers noted in their application documents, with the Brookwood bus stop being 580m to the south and serviced by route 207, while a Bus Connect will add two routes from this stop.

The application site consists of approximately 1.218ha and forms part of the outer suburbs of Ballyvolane, about 2.7km from the city centre.

The lands just to the north have been identified as a strategic employment site zoned for light industry and the R614 lies to the west, with the surrounding lands forming part of a planning permission granted recently for Longview Developments.

The Longview scheme consists of 750 units and a local centre, including retail, creche, doctors’ surgery and community use unit, which surrounds the application to the north, east and southern boundaries. The plans include provision for a pedestrian link to this development.

Cork City Council are set to make a decision on the plans by September 22.
