The family of a 19-year-old man who died following a two-car collision earlier this month have thanked the public for their support as they “navigate the path forward” while faced with an “unbearable” loss.

Dovydas Palkis, of Gortnaclohy Heights in Skibbereen in West Cork, died when the car he was driving collided with a truck on the N71 between Ballinhassig and Innishannon at 7.15am on July 21.

The young man was a staff member at the Kerry-based construction firm Jovin Projects. He was also a past pupil of Skibbereen Community School.

In a post on Skibbereen notice board, his parents Stella and Vidmantas and step-parents John and Agne spoke of being appreciative of the kind gestures of the local community since the death of Dovydas.

“The tragic loss of our beloved Dovydas has left a void in our hearts that feels unbearable.

"But in the midst of our sorrow, we have been truly humbled and held up by the incredible outpouring of support from our community.

"The love from family, friends, and neighbors has been a powerful source of comfort and strength.

“Every meal brought to our home, every flower sent, every helping hand, and every generous gift has been a tangible sign of your love. Your kindness has truly touched our hearts and lightened our burden.”

A requiem mass for Dovydas took place at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Skibbereen on July 25.
